Effect of two environments and fertilization recommendations on the development and production of bell pepper (cv. Nathalie) Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Lozano-Fernández,Jaime; Orozco-Orozco,Luz Fanny; Montoya-Munera,Luis Felipe.
Abstract Some unappropriated techniques are found in bell pepper agricultural management. Those are: non-balancing nutritional profile among soil contribution, crop requirements and fertilizer efficiency, excessive use of composite sources and the lack of availability of studies on recommendations in different environments where this crop is grown. In order to mitigate the inadequate techniques in the agronomic management of bell pepper, an evaluation of four fertilization treatments under open field and protected conditions with plastic cover was conducted. Nathalie cultivar was grown during 2014-B and 2015-A at "Corporación Colombiana de Investigación Agropecuaria", -CORPOICA research center, located in Llanogrande, township of Rionegro (Antioquia,...

Effects of chlorocholine chloride and paclobutrazol on cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz cv. Rocha) plant growth and tuberous root quality Agriscientia (Córdoba)
Medina,R.; Burgos,A.; Difranco,V.; Mroginski,L.; Cenóz,P..
The effects of chlorocholine chloride (CCC) and paclobutrazol (PBZ) foliar application on shoot and root parameters of cassava field-grown plants were studied (0, 45 and 90 mg active ingredient per plant). CCC and PBZ reduced total plant and first branch height, aerial fresh mass and tuberous root number. PBZ delayed branching and significantly decreased tuberous root fresh mass, while CCC caused no modifications in these parameters. In addition, CCC and PBZ treatments did not modify tuberous root diameter, while PBZ reduced tuberous root length significantly. Starch content was increased by both growth regulators at the lower dose, whereas dry matter content was increased only by CCC. In conclusion, CCC suppresses excessive vegetative growth, favours...

Efficiency analysis of a sheep farm AgEcon
Vincze, Judit; Tenk, Antal.
Our study shows an analysis of a sheep farm. The present farm was chosen for analysis due to the fact that it is run under special natural conditions and as for the sheep farming, it has quite a few non-typical features. These raise some economic issues, which have to be analysed, questions have to be answered that may result in useful conclusions. Since sheep farming does not seem to be able to overcome its difficulties on its own, the EU support system could give the initial step necessary for the success and would also help to sustain sheep farms. The amount of grant that is usual in the EU could provide for the sustainability of this sector, the relative safety of sales, the equal chances of the farms operating under different capabilities and if...

Efficiency of boron application in an Oxisol cultivated with banana in the Central Amazon Anais da ABC (AABC)
Moreira,Adônis; Castro,César de; Fageria,Nand K..
In the Amazon region, there is no information on the fertilization of banana plants with boron (B). Besides this, the extractant (hot water) currently used to test B concentrations has many limitations. The aim of this work was to study the effect of B on the fruit yield and quality of banana plants of the Cavendish (AAA) sub-group, grown in dystrophic Yellow Latosol (Oxisol or Xanthic Ferralsol), in the Amazonas State, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized split plot in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme, composed of four B rates (0, 4, 8 and 12 kg ha-1) and two harvest cycles (sub-treatments), with four replicates. The B availability in the soil was determined by three extractants: Mehlich 3, hot water and KCl 1.0 mol L-1. The application of B...

Enhancing food and livelihood security in the context of the food and financial crisis: challenges and opportunities for small scale rainwater harvesting and conservation AgEcon
Baiphethi, Mompati N.; Viljoen, Machiel F.; Kundhlande, Godfrey; Ralehlolo, N.G..
The world recently experienced the food and financial crisis. The food crisis was an indicator of the challenges towards sufficiently feeding an increasing world population. Food production through rainfed and irrigated agriculture account for the bulk of the freshwater used globally but the water is still sufficient to meet the MDG goal on hunger reduction. Agricultural water management is thus an important challenge for feeding humanity; creates the need to find sustainable methods of managing water that will include all water users. Some of these methods include rainwater harvesting which has great potential in increasing food production as compared to irrigation. This paper aims to identify challenges and opportunities for small scale rainwater...

Environmental group identification for upland rice production in central Brazil Scientia Agricola
Heinemann,Alexandre Bryan; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar.
Upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) production is basically concentrated in four central Brazilian States, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Rondônia and Tocantins. To reduce the genotype and environment (G × E) interactions, the classification of environment groups was proposed. The goal of this study explores possibilities to adjust the upland rice regional breeding systems to optimally fit to the range of environments they are targeting, based on a historical yield data set of the Brazilian Geographic and Statistics Institute (IBGE, www.ibge.gov.br/home/) from 54 microregions. The specific objectives of this study were: (i) to identify and classify environmental groups in the Brazilian upland rice production area; (ii) to validate these environmental groups using yield...

Establishment of drought screening protocols for rice under field conditions Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Sakai,Tomoko; Duque,Myriam Cristina; Vallejo Cabrera,Franco Alirio; Martínez,César Pompilio; Ishitani,Manabu.
Protocols were established for screening rice genotypes for tolerance to water-limited conditions under field conditions. These protocols were successfully used to select the best genotypes for further experiments. Rice genotypes responded differently when subjected to water-limited conditions. Experiments conducted under field conditions indicated that rice genotypes Curinga and CT6241 performed much better in terms of grain yield under water-limited conditions than varieties Azucena, Nerica, CICA8 and Palmar. Curinga, CT6241, CICA8 and Palmar were selected for further studies. The first two genotypes are tolerant and whereas the last two are susceptible to water stress.

Estimación del nivel óptimo de mortalidad por pesca y riesgo de sobreexplotación de la castañeta (Cheilodactylus bergi) OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Cordo, H.D..
Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica King & Broderip, 1832): A new fishery in the Argentine continental shelf. Yield-per-recruit model was applied to the stock of castañeta (Cheilodactylus bergi)in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (Southwest Atlantic, among 34° and 39°30' S), in order to estimate the range of F0.1 values resulting from the uncertainty in the parameters of the model. Simulations with variations in natural mortality and recruitment were carried out, in order to estimate the risk of overfishing associated with different fishing mortality levels. The criterion that spawning stock biomass be mantained over 35. of its unexploited level was adopted. For an optimum age of first capture of 4 years, the range of calculated F0.1...

Estratificación de la flota industrial de buques fresqueros y estimación de los rendimientos OceanDocs
Bertolotti, M.I.; Pagani, A.N.; Hernandez, D.R.; Buono, J.J..
In order to increase knowledge about the ice chilling fleet and to explain the relationship between structural variables and yields, a simplified model was developed. The fleet was classified in three homogeneous strata. Stratum I includes the smallest ships, with a catch composition equal to that of the large coastal fishing vessels. The stratum yields decreased in 1997 and 1998. Strata II and III have common hake as the main target of catches. Yields of those strata showed a continuous decrease as of 1994/1995. Therefore, the species was replaced by other fish originally caught by other fleets. These two last strata are more vulnerable to overfishing of traditional coastal and demersal fisheries.

Estratificación y análisis de la eficacia y la eficiencia de la flota costera de pequeña escala perteneciente a la Sociedad de Patrones Pescadores del puerto de Mar del Plata. OceanDocs
Errazti, E.; Hernandez, D.R.; Bertolotti, M.I.; Buono, J.J..
This chapter includes an economic analysis of the small scale fleet of the Mar del Plata harbour, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The original study was carried out at the request of the Skippers Fisheries Society to find out the relative efficacy and efficiency of homogeneous groups of associated vessels. Based on the information available, to tune the observed data, assess the relative efficacy and estimate the relative economic efficiency of the fleet, an ad hoc model was designed. Length, gross registered tonnage, engine power and number of crew members were considered and analyzed as structural variables for 1995, 1996 and 1997. No changes in variables for the period were observed so, the efficacy and efficiency analysis was carried out for the year...
